What is Rosacea? Rosacea is a skin condition in which redness of face occurs along with acne. It looks like a strong blush with especially red cheeks for most people. However, it can be hard to distinguish whether or not one has rosacea.
Rosacea often occurs in individuals with a history of rosacea in the family. It also occurs in individuals who have light skin and tend to blush easily. Although the skin condition has been identified, doctors do not know the exact cause of rosacea. However, there are known triggers, which are conditions that exacerbate the red skin. Some triggers are exposure to the elements, drinking alcohol, exercising, and other activities that increase heart rate and blood flow.
So what is rosacea? There are a few differences between a regular blush and rosacea. Red skin lasts for much longer than a temporary blush and can last up to a few days. The skin on the face may feel overly sensitive, similar to a sunburn. The eyes are affected as well, with typical symptoms of dryness, redness and swelling. There may also be a spiderweb pattern of veins on the face. The biggest difference is the presence of acne like bumps. Along with the redness of face are small papules that grow along the face. An uncommon but strikingly noticeable effect is rhinophyma, which is an enlargement of the nose due to increased growths in that concentrated area. This usually only happens in advanced rosacea.
Although rosacea is an embarrassing condition to have and there are no cures, there are some options. The red cheeks can be hidden easily with makeup. If one wishes to lessen the red skin, antibiotics and creams can be prescribed by doctors to assist in relief. If that is not satisfactory, more drastic actions can be taken, such as laser surgery. Surgery can potentially eliminate the flush, although repeat treatments may be needed to make it permanent.
Overall, rosacea is not a dangerous or life threatening condition, so treatment is solely up to the discretion of the person.
